The Crystal Jacket is one of the best thought-out ski / snowboard jackets on the market. The whole jacket is waterproof and fully taped - meaning no matter how much snow / sleet / rain you manage to get yourself into - you’re going to stay dry. This thing is practically a wet suit.
Throughout the jacket you’ll find loads of pockets - there’s room for a snack, cell phone, ipod, glasses, books - whatever. You certainly don’t need to carry a backpack when you have this thing on. You become your own sherpa. The pockets are also placed very strategically, so when you fall hard on the hill, you aren’t going to crack what you have stowed away.
Core venting zippers are built into the jacket - meaning you can unzip in certain places and allow only a small layer of mesh to be between you and the fresh air. This is a quick way to cool down fast - in the areas you need it most. The liner is body mapped, with cozy furry lining where you’ll need to stay the warmest, right down to some shell-only areas. There is a big stretch cord on the inside to give the jacket to give you a more tailored, flattering fit - and if you don’t have a big belly - you’ll definitely need this. I find most of the lulu jackets fit amply around the stomach area.
The outside of the jacket has been treated to be abrasion resistant and to help shed the snow and rain. Watch how fast beads of moisture just roll off the jacket. It’s magic.
There is an underliner on the jacket that pulls down to keep the snow from getting in. You snap it up and no matter how hard you fall in that ditch of powder, nothing will get it. The sleeves have a similar system - there are thumbholes that stop the inner layer from riding up - and prevent any snow from getting in. It also makes getting your mittens on and off a cinch, since the fabric is so smooth.
The hood offers full coverage, and is adjustable to keep maximum heat - and to seal out the weather. It can also be rolled away for those sunny days.
